Let’s get right to it.
1. Google Sites Vs. Wix At A Glance
Let’s start by doing some quick comparisons between the two.
|Industry Leader||Wix currently boasts 154 million users, 4.3 million of which are premium users.|
Google Sites takes the throne with 455 million users, though.
To give you a good idea of how impressive both of these numbers are. There are currently over 1.3 billion according to a study published by Netcraft.
|Usefulness Of Features||Google Sites has a clear case of being better in terms of features. The ability to install plug-ins and add functions put Google Sites above Wix.|
|Ease Of Use||Wix wins this round for sure. Wix offers an intuitive website builder that’s super easy to use that even a beginner could do an impressive website in one sitting.|
Google Sites has a bit of a learning curve to it. Yes, it’s more powerful but you’d have to learn how to use it properly first.
|Customer Support||Customer support for these two websites is both just above average. When you’re servicing hundreds of millions of users, that’s pretty understandable.|
Both have active forums and threads to communicate with your fellow website owners which I find super helpful.
|Value For Money||Wix is the cheaper option overall but there is more to it than the price alone. If you’re a power user and want to control small details of your website, then Google Sites is the better choice. If you just want a website that’s just ready to go with minor adjustments, Wix is the clear option.|
|Overall Winner||Wix is the better choice overall but it’s not as clear-cut as to be able to give a solid recommendation. These two products are pretty close.|
Wix barely eked out a win on their head-to-head comparison. To be fair, the comparison above isn’t going to tell you the whole story.
Google Sites is a popular and easy-to-use website building platform that is well-suited for team sites. Wix, on the other hand, is a site builder that allows you to craft modern minimalistic websites in a few clicks, perfect for small businesses and portfolio websites.
2. Who Is Wix Best For?
If you just want a website builder that works as smoothly as can be, then Wix is the right tool for the job.
This tool is best used by beginners that do not want to meddle with more complex settings.
Make no mistake though, this tool is capable even with its basic settings.
3. Who Is Google Sites Best For?
If you want to use the tool that is considered the market leader, then Google Sites is the absolute perfect choice.
It is certainly more capable than Wix for its customizability alone.
4. A Close Look At The Features Of Wix and Google Sites
In this section, we’ll take a look at the features of Google Sites vs. Wix:
|Plugins & Add-Ons|
There are tons of Google Sites plugins that you can install on your site. Also, using Wix App Market, you can add website plugins.
Using both Google Sites and Wix, you’ll be able to host your website.
With these two platforms, you can easily craft and customize your website.
With Google Sites, you can make a dedicated eCommerce website while Wix has a specific eCommerce site builder you can utilize.
Both Google Sites and Wix have multi-currency support that users can use.
|24/7 Customer Support|
Google Sites has 24/7 email, chat, and phone support while with Wix you can contact an agent (available 24/7), read articles, and browse videos.
Both Google Sites and Wix have active forums to help you with your queries.
With Google Sites, you can customize your theme for your website. Wix also has a huge library of different site templates you can utilize.
4. Key Features Of Google Sites
Google Sites is the most versatile CMS in the industry, there’s no doubt about it.
The potential of this platform is limited only by the user. As such, it is important to learn more complex features to get the most out of this platform.
They are industry leaders for very good reasons.
Just imagine, 35% of all websites on the internet are using Google Sites. That’s market domination if I’ve ever seen one.
“Google Sites does come with a learning curve. It’s easy enough to use on your first go, but you’ll soon realize that it has more power under the hood. It’s an easy-to-learn yet hard-to-master type of tool which is why it is so powerful.”— Burkhard Berger
#1 Google Sites Plugins
Google Sites would not be where it is today without its plugins.
It has over 54,000 mostly free and paid plugins available to all its users.
These plugins allow you to customize your Google Sites site by giving you additional capabilities that your standard theme doesn’t have.
If you can think of some enhancement you need for your site, chances are, there’s already a plugin for that.
In my opinion, this is the main feature that attracted many users to Google Sites.
It is made using proper SEO guidelines, ensuring that it’s only using the best practices.
If you don’t think that’s enough, you can even install an SEO plugin of your choice.
Google Sites’ SEO plugin recommendation is Yoast SEO which I’ve been using for many years now.
It truly is a wonderful SEO plugin that’s a MUST for every user.
#3 Theme System
Google Sites has more than 8,000 themes available for its users.
A theme can be considered as a “skin” for your website.
You can select a theme from a collection or you can create your own using a Google Sites theme editor.
What’s great about it is they are categorized in a way that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for.
For instance, if your website is all about wine and cheese, Google Sites will have something related to this.
#4 Ease of Installation
Google Sites is known for its ease of installation.
Their famed 5 to 10-minute installation guide is aptly named considering how hassle-free Google Sites installation is.
What’s more, is you can install Google Sites on your domain.
Unlike Wix, which makes it hard to host outside of its service, Google Sites can be installed on any domain that you own.
The instructions may differ a little bit for each platform but the fact remains, a Google Sites site is something you truly own.
Many web hosts even have tools to make installing Google Sites easier.
cPanel’s Fantastico and Softaculous is a good example. It installs Google Sites in just a few clicks.
#5 Open Source Freedom
This is one of the most underrated features of Google Sites.
Google Sites is an open-source CMS.
In short, you can use it however you like.
You own your copy of Google Sites once you installed it on your website (something that can’t be said for other website builders).
And because it’s an open-source platform, it has a bustling community with active forums.
Google Sites has hundreds of thousands of users in its forum ready to give out advice, help, and offer guidance for all users.
6. Key Features Of Wix
Having the best product in your industry isn’t enough reason to guarantee your success.
You need to have a good showcase website to get people to notice your product.
This is one of the main driving forces behind the success of Wix.
Millions of websites are already powered by this tool.
Creating a website with Wix is as easy as customizing a Word Document.
In this section, we’re going to discuss the main features that give it this great customizability.
#1 Wix Editor
Wix Editor gives you the option to start from scratch and make your website by drag-and-dropping content onto your website canvas.
You can just choose from over 500 designer-made templates that are categorized by type of business.
As you can see from the screenshot above, you can simply drag and drop anything you want into your website canvas.
Wix boasts the best drag-and-drop website builder in the business.
You don’t need to save then preview the site to see the changes you made. The editor displays the website as is.
This makes website building such a breeze!
#2 Wix Artificial Design Intelligence
This means exactly how it reads.
Wix has an AI that designs a stunning website for you.
All you need to do is answer a few questions.
Yes, that’s it.
It gives you a few questions about your goal and produces a website tailored to your answer.
But don’t worry if the AI does not produce the exact website you envisioned.
You can always change the resulting website by adding or removing some content blocks.
You can edit this to your liking until it’s closest to the website you imagined.
Another thing that’s great about this feature is it is mobile-friendly.
With more and more people moving to mobile browsing as their main form of internet browsing, a mobile-friendly website is viewed more favorably by both the users and search engines.
#3 Velo by Wix
This feature is catered more towards intermediate to hardcore users of Wix.
Velo is an open development platform that accelerates the way you build your web applications.
It allows you to add custom functionality and interactions using Velo’s APIs, use your tools, and enjoy serverless coding, in an open platform.
I know, I know. It’s a bit confusing.
The gist of this feature is to allow you to add functions that are not found in Wix’s templates to your website.
#4 Wix Logo Maker
This is another neat feature that’s more than a gimmick.
Sure, there are plenty of free logo makers on the internet but most just give out template logos that you can’t use.
Wix does things differently.
It asks you details like the name of your company, tagline (if any), industry, description, and other small things.
It will then ask additional questions to narrow down your preference.
This goes on for a couple more questions, then finally you will be given a list of logos you can choose from.
After you’ve finalized your logo, you can click the Get Your Logo and download the file.
“The logo that you can download in Wix for free is just a low-resolution sample file with a size limited to 400 x 400. If you want to download the full resolution of the logo, along with full commercial rights, you need to purchase one of their two logo packages.”– Burkhard Berger
#5 Wix App Market
The Wix App Market is filled with over 300 popular web apps that you can download for your website.
These can enhance your website, giving it functions that aren’t found in the standard version.
Most of these apps are free to use, optimized for mobile, and can easily be added to your website in just a few clicks.
As you can see from the screenshot above, you can select what type of web app you want to be added to your website.
One app add-on I particularly liked is their Instagram Feed app.
By using this add-on, you can easily link your Instagram page to your Wix website, which makes for some aesthetically pleasing website design.
Their App Market is full of these kinds of apps.
Choosing the right app add-on for your website will give it that upgrade.
7. Google Sites Vs. Wix – Pros And Con
It is important to consider the pros and cons before committing to a platform.
And so, let me give you the pros and cons of Google Sites vs. Wix:
|Beginner-friendly||Wix website isn’t transferable to a third-party domain|

|Can be uploaded to a different domain|
|Most SEO-friendly CMS in the industry|
8. Where Do I Get The Most For My Money?
I will be posting several screenshots in this section to help you see their pricing package breakdown much easier.
Wix Pricing Plans
- Connect Domain ($4.50/month): This plan is the cheapest of the bunch. This is only recommended if you already have a domain registered elsewhere.
- Combo ($8.50/month): This plan is recommended for simple websites with basic functionality. You will still gain access to all the great Wix features but you’re limited in terms of bandwidth, storage, and video hours.
- Unlimited ($12.50/month): This is their best-selling plan. This package is perfect for medium-sized businesses. The unlimited bandwidth can handle the influx of site visitors in case you need it.
- Combo ($24.50/month): This is just like their Unlimited plan but with added storage and professional logo assistance.
- Business Plans ($17-35/month): If you are planning on incorporating some online payments on your website, any of these 3 plans would be the best choice. If you are planning on accepting different currencies, you should go with the higher packages.
Note: You can always try their service out by applying for a premium plan. If you cancel your plan within the first 14 days, you will receive a full refund no questions asked.
Google Sites Pricing Plans
Google Sites offers 4 different packages for its users.
Note: If you choose to get billed yearly, you are entitled to a 20% discount.
- Personal ($4/month): This is their most basic plan. It’s pretty bare, though. You can’t install your themes or even connect your Google Analytics. Perfect for people that are just starting.
- Premium ($8/month): This plan comes as the most popular out of the 4. You get one year for free, Google analytics integration, the ability to install premium themes, and more. The ability to install plug-ins is still missing, though.
- Business ($25/month): This has all the Premium features but with additional support for plug-ins, advanced SEO tools, SFTP, site backups, and more.
- eCommerce ($45/month): This plan is geared towards bigger websites. You have all of their features and additional fun stuff like multiple currency integration, premium online support, online store design, and dropshipping support.
9. Conclusion – Which Is Better: Google Sites vs. Wix?
In this Google Sites vs. Wix comparison, Wix is the better option.
It is easier to use out of the two. It also lets you select a design from handpicked templates that are proven to work.
By this alone, your chances of actually making a cool-looking website are increased by a considerable factor.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that Wix offers the better drag-and-drop customization tool.
Google Sites is still an amazing platform, especially if you want more customization.

10. Google Sites Vs. Wix – FAQ
In this section, we’re going to go over questions that I may have missed in the Google Sites vs. Wix comparison.
Yes. You can use these platforms for free but they have limited capabilities. For instance, on Google Sites Free Blog, you can not upload a plug-in, themes, and own the site. You also can’t have your domain. You can only use their domain which will look something like (name).Google Sites.com. It’s the same thing for Wix.
Yes. Wix and Google Sites host the websites for you. This will cut off your need to search for hosting providers or pay extra for hosting services. You can remove all the hassle and let Wix or Google Sites manage all the updates and technical side of your website.
If you have already purchased a domain name elsewhere, you can use Wix on it but it’s not as simple as installing Wix on your domain unlike on Google Sites. You have two choices – connect or transfer your domain. If you decide to just connect your domain, you can do it via name servers or pointing.
If you have your domain, installing Google Sites is pretty straightforward. You just need to download the Google Sites package files and upload the package to your hosting account. You can upload via FTP, file manager upload, or SSH. You can also install Google Sites using Softaculous or Fantastico from your cPanel.
