Wix vs. WordPress – An 100% Unbiased Comparison For 2022

Wix vs WordPress

I think it’s fair to assume that you are currently researching Wix vs. WordPress articles to see which one would suit your needs the best.

Well, you’re definitely in the right place…

In this article, I am going to directly compare these two very similar products to help you pick out the right platform for your specific needs.

But before we start with some direct comparison between these two, let’s have a quick refresher and discuss what these two products are used for.

To put it simply, Wix and WordPress are both tools for building websites, but that’s where most of their similarity ends. Wix is a website builder and WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System). You need to understand this difference because it will be essential to your decision.

Wix is a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) type of website builder that’s pleasant to use and even a child could do it. WordPress, on the other hand, is a CMS (Content Management System) which requires more technical know-how since it’s more than a drag-and-drop tool.

I know, this explanation may seem a bit vague but you will understand it better as you read this article.

Let’s get right on it.

1. Wix vs. WordPress At A Glance

If you type in the word “website builder for my site” on Google, I’m pretty confident you will get these two websites on your top 10 results, depending on your location, of course.

This is expected since this is their primary purpose – to help you build your website.

Now, the question is which one is the best? Let’s start by doing a quick comparison between the two in this short table detailing their signature designs and their most popular pricing plan.

Wix (R)

Best Overall. Easy-to-use website builder with great themes to get started for new website creators. Starts at $17/month.Best for flexibility. Customizable, open-source, and highly accessible platform for website building. Starts at $25/month.

2. Who Is Wix Best For?

If you just want a website builder that works as smoothly as can be, then Wix is the right tool for the job.

This tool is best used by beginners that do not want to meddle with more complex settings. Make no mistake though, this tool is capable even with its basic settings.

3. Who Is WordPress Best For?

If you want to use the tool that is considered the market leader, then WordPress is the absolute perfect choice. It is certainly more capable than Wix for its customizability alone.

WordPress does come with a learning curve. It’s easy enough to use on your first go, but you’ll soon realize that it has more power under the hood. It’s an “easy to learn, hard to master” type of tool which is why it is so powerful.

4. A Close Look At The Features Of Wix and WordPress

This isn’t going to be an apples-to-apples comparison since these two products have fundamentally different approaches to website building. Nevertheless, I would make this comparison as objective as possible.

5. Key Features Of Wix

Wix Website Builder Homepage

Having the best product in your industry isn’t enough reason to guarantee your success. You need to have a good showcase website to get people to notice your product.

This is one of the main driving forces behind the success of Wix. Millions of websites are already powered by this tool. Creating a website with Wix is as easy as customizing a Word Document.

In this section, we’re going to discuss the main features that give it this great customizability.

#1 Wix Editor

Wix Editor gives you the option to start from scratch and make your website by drag-and-dropping content onto your website canvas.

You can just choose from over 500 designer-made templates that are categorized by type of business.

Wix Website Builder

As you can see from the screenshot above, you can simply drag and drop anything you want into your website canvas.

Wix boasts the best drag-and-drop website builder in the business. It’s a WYSIWIG editor that means “What You See Is What You Get.” You don’t need to save and then preview the site to see the changes you made. The editor displays the website as is.

This makes website building such a breeze!

#2 Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence

This means exactly how it reads. Wix has an AI that designs a stunning website for you.

All you need to do is answer a few questions. Yes, that’s it.

It gives you a few questions about your goal and produces a website tailored to your answer.

But don’t worry if the AI does not produce the exact website you envisioned. You can always change the resulting website by adding or removing some content blocks. You can edit this ‘tailor-made’ website to your liking until it’s closest to the website you imagined.

Wix Section Design

Another thing that’s great about this feature is it is mobile-friendly. With more and more people moving to mobile browsing as their main form of internet browsing, a mobile-friendly website is viewed more favorably by both the users and search engines.

#3 Velo by Wix

Velo By Wix

This feature is catered more towards intermediate to hardcore users of Wix.

Velo is an open development platform that accelerates the way you build your web applications. It allows you to add custom functionality and interactions using Velo’s APIs, use your tools, and enjoy serverless coding, on an open platform.

I know, I know. It’s a bit confusing.

The gist of this feature is to allow you to add functions that are not found in Wix’s templates to your website.

#4 Wix Logo Maker

This is another neat feature that’s more than a gimmick.

Sure, there are plenty of FREE logo makers on the internet but most just give out template logos that you can’t use.

Wix does things differently. It asks you for details like the name of your company, tagline (if any), industry, description, and other small things.

Wix Logo Maker

It will then ask additional questions to narrow down your preference.

Wix Logo Maker: Design Questions

This goes on for a couple more questions, then finally you will be given a list of logos you can choose from.

#5 Wix App Market

The Wix App Market is filled with over 300 popular web apps that you can download for your website. These web apps can enhance your website, giving it functions that aren’t found in the standard version.

Most of these apps are free to use, optimized for mobile, and can easily be added to your website in just a few clicks.

Wix App Market

As you can see from the screenshot above, you can select what type of web app you want to be added to your website. One app add-on I particularly liked is their Instagram Feed app.

By using this add-on, you can easily link your Instagram page to your Wix website, which makes for some aesthetically-pleasing website design.

Wix-Instagram Connection

Their App Market is full of these kinds of apps. Choosing the right app add-on for your website will give it that upgrade.

6. Key Features Of WordPress

WordPress Homepage

WordPress is the most versatile CMS in the industry, there’s no doubt about it. The potential of this platform is limited only by the user. As such, it is important to learn more complex features to get the most out of this platform.

They are industry leaders for very good reasons. Just imagine, ~35% of all websites on the internet are using WordPress. That’s market domination if I’ve ever seen one.

We’re going to talk about its features in this section, but only the best ones. If I try to write all about its features, I will need another article.

#1 Plugins, Plugins, Plugins

WordPress would not be where it is today without its plugins.

WordPress has over 54,000 mostly free and paid plugins available to all its users. These plugins allow you to customize your WordPress site by giving you additional capabilities that your standard WordPress theme doesn’t have.

If you can think of some enhancement you need for your WordPress site, chances are, there’s already a plugin for that.

WordPress Plugins

#2 The Master of SEO

In my opinion, this is the main feature that attracted many users to WordPress.

WordPress is made using proper SEO guidelines, ensuring that it’s only using SEO best practices. If you don’t think that’s enough, you can even install an SEO plugin of your choice.

WordPress’s SEO plugin recommendation is Yoast SEO which I’ve been using for many years now. It truly is a wonderful SEO plugin that’s a MUST for every user.

#3 Theme System

WordPress has more than 8,000 themes available for its users.

WordPress Themes

A theme can be considered as a “skin” for your website. You can select a theme from a collection or you can create your own using a WordPress theme editor.

What’s great about WordPress themes is they are categorized in a way that makes it easy to find what you’re looking for. For instance, if your website is all about wine and cheese, WordPress will have something related to this.

#4 Ease of Installation

WordPress is known for its ease of installation. Their famed 5 to 10-minute installation guide is aptly named considering how hassle-free WordPress installation is.

What’s more, you can install WordPress on your domain. Unlike Wix, which makes it hard to host outside of its service, WordPress can be installed on any domain that you own.

The installation instructions may differ a little bit for each platform but the fact remains, a WordPress site is something you truly own.

WordPress Installation Guide

Many web hosts even have tools to make installing WordPress easier. cPanel’s Fantastico and Softaculous are good examples. It installs WordPress in just a few clicks.

#5 Open Source Freedom

This is one of the most underrated features of WordPress.

WordPress is an open-source CMS. In short, you can use it however you like. You own your copy of WordPress once you installed it on your website (something that can’t be said for other website builders).

And because it’s an open-source platform, it has a bustling community with active forums. WordPress has hundreds of thousands of users in its forum ready to give out advice, help, and offer guidance to all users.

7. Wix vs. WordPress – Pros And Cons

Wix is a website builder that comes highly recommended for beginners. Their easy-to-operate website is the best in the business. It gives practically anyone the ability to design a decent website.

8. Where Do I Get The Most For My Money?

I will be posting several screenshots in this section to help you see their pricing package breakdown much easier.

Wix Pricing Plans

Wix Pricing Plans
  • Connect Domain ($4.50/month): This plan is the cheapest of the bunch. This is only recommended if you already have a domain registered elsewhere.
  • Combo ($8.50/month): This plan is recommended for simple websites with basic functionality. You will still gain access to all the great Wix features but you’re limited in terms of bandwidth, storage, and video hours.
  • Unlimited ($12.50/month): This is their best-selling plan. This package is perfect for medium-sized businesses. The unlimited bandwidth can handle the influx of site visitors in case you need it.
  • Combo ($24.50/month): This is just like their Unlimited plan but with added storage and professional logo assistance.
Wix Business Pricing Plans
  • Business Plans ($17-35/month): If you are planning on incorporating some online payments on your website, any of these 3 plans would be the best choice. If you are planning on accepting different currencies, you should go with the higher packages.

You can always try their service out by applying for a premium plan. If you cancel your plan within the first 14 days, you will receive a full refund no questions asked.

WordPress Pricing Plans

WordPress offers 4 different packages for its users.

WordPress Pricing Plans
  • Personal ($4/month): This is their most basic plan. It’s pretty bare, though. You can’t install your themes or even connect your Google Analytics. Perfect for people that are just starting.
  • Premium ($8/month): This plan comes as the most popular out of the 4. You get one year for free, Google analytics integration, the ability to install premium themes, and more. The ability to install plug-ins is still missing, though.
  • Business ($25/month): This has all the Premium features but with additional support for plug-ins, advanced SEO tools, SFTP, site backups, and more.
  • eCommerce ($45/month): This plan is geared towards bigger websites. You have all of their features and additional fun stuff like multiple currency integration, premium online support, online store design, and dropshipping support.

If you choose to get billed yearly, you are entitled to a 20% discount.

9. Conclusion – Which Is Better: Wix vs. WordPress?

Wix is the better option most of the time simply because it is easier to use out of the two. However, basing my conclusion on ease of use alone isn’t going to be a good representation of these two great products.

To put things into perspective, ~35% of all websites you see on the internet are made from WordPress. ~12% belongs to Wix. This means that almost 50% of all internet content is using any of these two platforms.

Your favorite blogs are probably hosted via WordPress or Wix. This is how prevalent these two platforms are, with WordPress being the market leader.

So, which is better?

The truth is that WordPress is the better option if you want more customization and freedom to do your own thing. Unpacking all its capabilities has a steep learning curve, though.

Wix, on the other hand, is just selecting a design from handpicked templates that are proven to work. By this alone, your chances of actually making a cool-looking website are increased by a considerable factor. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Wix offers the better drag-and-drop customization tool.

All you have to do is search for their extension online, download it, and use it. That should make your decision a little bit easier since you can easily compare which one fits your profile better.

You can then compare their features more directly.

10. Wix vs. WordPress – FAQ

In this section, we’re going to go over questions that I may have missed in the Wix vs. WordPress comparison.

Are Any Of These Platforms Free?

Yes. You can use these platforms for free but they have limited capabilities. For instance, on WordPress Free Blog, you can not upload a plug-in, themes, and own the site. You also can’t have your domain. You can only use their domain which will look something like (name).wordpress.com.

It’s the same thing for Wix. You’re also limited since you don’t own the website.

If you want to build your brand, there’s not much use for using their free version, truth be told. Getting your SEO just right for those websites would almost be impossible since search engines rarely consider those sites valuable.

Does Wix/WordPress offer to host?

Yes. Wix and WordPress host the websites for you. This will cut off your need to search for hosting providers or pay extra for hosting services. You can remove all the hassle and let Wix or WordPress manage all the updates and technical side of your website.

Can I install Wix on my domain?

If you have already purchased a domain name elsewhere, you can use Wix on it but it’s not as simple as installing Wix on your domain, unlike WordPress.

You have 2 choices – connect or transfer your domain. If you decide to just connect your domain, you can do it via name servers or pointing.

The easier method is to just transfer your domain to Wix, meaning that you can manage all of your website’s settings on your Wix account instead of just two.

Can I install WordPress on my domain?

If you have your domain, installing WordPress is pretty straightforward.

You just need to download the WordPress package files and upload the package to your hosting account. You can upload via FTP, file manager upload, or SSH.

You can also install WordPress using Softaculous or Fantastico from your cPanel. This is the easier option as this would only take 5-10 minutes.
